Let’s talk, my people.
By now, you’ve probably seen one of those flashy social media ads that go something like this:
“Power your entire house with just this small solar box!”
“No NEPA, no fuel, no problem — this portable device will run your fridge, TV, fan, and even AC for 24 hours straight!” “Just plug and play – no installation needed!”
Sounds sweet, right? But here’s the bitter truth:
Most of these claims are either half-truths or full-blown lies.
As more Nigerians turn to solar to escape crazy electricity bills, bad power supply, and fuel wahala, some sellers are out here pushing “shortcut solutions” that don’t deliver. And sadly, many people only find out after they’ve wasted money.
So let’s break it down — so you no go fall mugu.
* Solar is not plug-and-play magic
First of all, solar no be juju. It’s a science-based, properly engineered solution. And like every proper system, it needs to be sized and installed correctly based on what you want to power.
A small power bank or “solar generator” (as they call it) may charge your phone, bulb, or fan — but once you plug in your freezer or TV, it goes off like NEPA during Champions League Final.
What these ads won’t tell you:
That the device can’t handle heavy appliances without going off.
That the battery inside lasts only 30 minutes to 1 hour with heavy appliances.
That the real cost of effective solar is not “cheap”
Let’s say the truth: Solar works 💯 – but it has to be done right.
So, what does it take to “do solar” the right way?
This is where Gennex Technologies comes in. We’ve been helping Nigerians go solar the proper way for over a decade. Before recommending any solution, we ask the right questions:
1. What appliances do you want to power?
Just lights and fans?
Or do you want to include your TV, freezer, pumping machine, etc.?
2. How many hours a day do you want backup for?
4 hours? 12 hours? 24/7?
3. Do you want full independence from the grid or just support when NEPA fails?
Once we know this, we carry out a load audit and design a system just for you — not some random off-the-shelf lie from Instagram.
Let’s talk components – What you should really be looking out for-
When going solar, these are the key things to check:
1. Hybrid Inverter and Rating
This controls how much power enters the battery from the panels – a small but mighty component inside the inverter unit that ensures safety. It then converts your battery’s power to usable current. It must match your total load (TV, fridge, pumps, etc). If you buy a low-grade inverter, expect wahala.
2. Battery Capacity
The battery stores the power. We use Lithium-Ion (LiFePO4) batteries that charge faster, last longer, and are far more efficient than traditional lead-acid.
3. Solar Panels
These charge the battery with sunlight. Your panel capacity must be able to match or exceed your daily usage, especially if you want full off-grid support.
🚫 Don’t be scammed by “all-in-one wonders”
If someone tells you they have a “solar system” that fits in a backpack and can run your full house, ask questions o. It’s either:
They’re lying, or
They’re selling a product that works for only small devices, and that’s okay – as long as they tell you the truth.
What to Do Instead
1. Do your homework
Understand your power needs. Don’t rush.
2. Ask the right questions
Is this system right for my load? Is it expandable? Does it have warranty?
3. Work with professionals
At Gennex Technologies, we don’t guess. We give you a personalized solar solution that matches your lifestyle, budget, and expectations.
